Work Over the Break

If you would like for your child to do a bit of work over the break, he/she may complete assignments on Compass Learning.  In Compass Learning, students have math folders set up based on where they are according to their MAP scores.  Students may work on these lessons at their own pace.  We have been working on this in class as part of our morning work each day.  Students know their login and passwords to get into Compass Learning.  Click here to head to the Compass Learning website.

A Peek at the Week After the Break

When we return from the break, we will be busy, busy, busy!  He is an overview of what we will be learning and any upcoming tests/quizzes.

Math:  Students will be learning to multiply a two digit by two digit number.  As always, students will also solve word problems involving multiplication.  Some will be one step problems, while others will require multiple steps.  We will continue our timed multiplication quizzes.  We are up to the 8 facts.  Please make sure students are spending some time studying their 0-8 facts some over the break.  Just 10 minutes a day will be great!

Quiz: January 5th: 0-8 timed multiplication quiz

Writing:  Students will begin writing information text.  We will begin by narrowing the focus and then writing an effective topic sentence.

Science:  We will continue our student of the seasons. At this point students should be able to explain what causes night and day.

Field Trip to the Challenger Space Center

We will be taking a field trip to the Challenger Space Center on December 13th.  This trip will tie in nicely with our astronomy unit of study.  Students will take a moon walk, participate in a flight simulation, and explore space during this trip.  We encourage students to be in uniform dress.  We will leave at 8:30 and return no later than 2:00.  Students will need to bring a bag lunch.

As always, I will need 2 chaperones for this trip. I already have one (Mrs. Stalcup), so I will need one more.  I will take the first parent who responds to me via email about serving as a chaperone.

The cost of the trip is $40.00.  If you have not paid your next deposit for this year's field trips, please do so on Parent Portal.  Permission slips will be in your child's green folder.  You may fill it out and send it in by December 12th.  Don't forget to fill out the back!

Service Learning Project December 5th - 9th

Lake Carolina is excited to join Spring Valley High School's Winter Days Service Learning Project. Next week, we will be collecting canned goods and nonperishable food items to donate to local food banks.  To add excitement to our food drive, we are having Spirit Week.  Each day, if a student brings in at least one food item, he or she can dress up in that day's theme!

Marvel Monday - Wear a super hero shirt or cape!
Top Hat Tuesday - Wear a hat!
Wacky Tacky Wednesday - Dress in a tacky way!
Throwback Thursday - Dress from a past decade!
Freaky Hair Friday - Do something crazy to your hair!

We hope to collect a lot of items to help those less fortunate.  The class that collects the most food items will get to participate in a mannequin challenge at recess!  Our class has already said they want to win this challenge!  So, please help up win this challenge by donating as many can goods as you can! The winning class will be filmed and the video will be shared on the morning show and the school's blog!
